Proposed Adopted 2018 Budget Detailed

2018 Budget Thoughts

The Woodstock Library is a vital part of the community. We serve a large portion of our residents and we strive to provide excellent service. We continue to change to meet the needs of the people we serve. We have added important services in the last few years, technology assistance appointments, homebound delivery services, more programs for teens, more writing workshops, and more computers available to our patrons.

Additions to the 2018 Budget were made in part by responding to our latest survey (January 2016). Survey respondents appreciated most the Library’s staff. Next year’s budget includes raises for staff and is getting the Library clerk staff closer to what will be New York State’s upcoming minimum wage changes. Many responses included the appreciation for the materials they borrow through the Mid-Hudson Library System so there are small increases to materials, especially digital resources which don’t require any extra shelf space and have been used in steadily increasing numbers year after year.

Other suggestions were increasing our programming to patrons. We have maintained steady programming this year with good attendance, and nice feedback but are expecting to add more offerings this fall. Other changes to the budget are a result of our changes this year in how we’ve been spending and receiving gifts from The Friends of the Library. The Library has been spending monies on programming that the Friends have traditionally paid for and the Friends are reimbursing the Library, so far in 2017 the Friends have sponsored $11, 367.78 worth of programming. The intent of this change is for Trustees, taxpayers, and interested community members to see the significant value in programming costs The Friends have always been working hard to give this community.

Other significant recommendations were to increase the size of the Library by expanding, improve the Library’s interior ambiance, to be open more days or hours, and to provide more technology, and technology learning opportunities. We are working to address some of these through seeking grants, fully investigating the impacts of more days and hours on staffing costs while maintaining quality service, and continuing our process of finding the best solution to creating more quality square footage for the Library.

I expect we as a community can come to a decision that is going to be the best choice so we can work together to fundraise, and build a better Library for Woodstockers to enjoy for many years. Meanwhile we will continue to increase our offerings and ensure we are serving the most people as possible. September is Library Card Sign Up month and we hope we can get the word out to everyone.
